Agenda:
- HUPE news - 29th Conference report
- Ivana Bokavšek: Targeted vocabulary and grammar units in use
To make our students use particular vocabulary and grammar bits in the right context successfully is one of a language teacher's priorities. It takes a persistent practice, and a skilful exchange of exercises to expose students to a regular and correct use of key vocabulary and grammar parts in the context. After this workshop, the participants will be able to apply different techniques and digital tools in order to encourage students to foster a correct and precise use of vocabulary and grammar in the aimed context.
- Adriana Petra Blažević, Mara Ruža Blažević & Tania Žuvela Blažević:
The representations of culture, race and gender in English language textbooks
In order to investigate and understand the relations between different social groups participating in copious anglophone settings, in this presentation we will discuss the findings of a quantitative analysis of the representations of culture, race and gender in English language textbooks. In the first section of the presentation we will discuss the theoretical background of the phenomenon in the light of the importance of English in modern education, frequently associated with various systems of social inequality. Thereafter, the listed and interpreted results of the content analysis of nine English language textbooks for first-year highschool students in Croatia will be presented and elaborated. The quantitative analysis was conducted with the aim of determining the prominence of various social groups in English language textbooks, as well as observing how they interact with one another. Finally, the main conclusions derived from the study will be briefly discussed once again in order to restate the focal ideas and open the discussion.
- Miranda Barac: Linguistic mediation - activities and assessments
What is linguistic mediation and what does it mean for our classes? How to teach linguistic mediation and assess it? How to create effective, engaging tasks and activities for your students to practise skills, acquire strategies and become more competent mediators? If you need answers to these questions, join this workshop which will give you an introduction to linguistic mediation and what it involves. You will be provided with sample activities, rubrics and checklists for teaching both intra and inter linguistic mediation. This workshop aims to support you and give you all the help that you need to become more confident in teaching this new skill in your classes.
