Finally, we are thrilled to congratulate and applaud the winners of HUPE in Storyland competition in all three categories.
Your prizes will arrive shortly after your students choose gadgets via Google Form that will be sent to you. The packages for the students include 9 Modra lasta goodie bags containing a Reading club program, a wireless reading lamp, a set of coasters, a folder, a notebook, and a to-do sheet. The packages for all nine teachers include a table calendar, a to-do sheet, a weekly planner, ŠK newspaper, and a book (Vibracija uspjeha). HUPE offers the teacher mentors a free conference fee and gadgets of choice for our students.

All stories will be published in a digital compilation of short stories - Storyland almanac. We sincerely hope all the young writers will continue to polish up their writing skills and play this game of finding and spreading beauty in written words. We also hope their teachers will continue to guide them and encourage them through this adventure.

HUPE in Storyland writing competition

Dear HUPE members,

the time has come to announce the start of our fourth HUPE in Storyland writing competition. The competition starts on 1 December 2023 and finishes on 15 January 2024. The winners will be announced on 8 March 2024.

How to apply?

Go to the HUPE web page (https://hupe.hr/index.php/competition-1/competition-temlates) and download the template form. Once downloaded, fill in the required details. After completing the form, generate a password. This password must be used as the title in uploading the document and it has to be incorporated in the document itself.

All stories must be completely anonimous. No school, mentors or students names should be revealed before the date of the announcement, 8 March 2024.

After announcing the winners, you will be asked to resend your students’ short stories to prove your identity. Check the HUPE web page for the published ranking list, complete with passes, to ensure your students' rankings are accurate.

There are three categories in the competition, make sure you select the category you are applying for.

Jasenka Čengić: From Exposure to Awareness: Capitalizing on Language Learners' Individual Differences to Create a Thriving Classroom Environment

Biography:

Jasenka Čengić is a Research and Teaching Assistant at the Department of English, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. She teaches a course on TEFL and organizes MA students' teaching practice. She is a PhD candidate in the Foreign Language Education Doctoral Program at the University of Zagreb. Prior to becoming a researcher, she worked as a language teacher in both primary and secondary school as well as a university ESP lecturer. Her research interests include individual differences in learning English and other languages as well as in teacher education. She has published her work in various international publications.

Abstract:

In this plenary I will investigate both extra- and intra-learner factors and discuss their importance for the effectiveness of different approaches to teaching. Starting from theoretical concepts I will focus on exposure and metalinguistic awareness to discuss practical ways in which teachers can capitalize on what learners bring to the language classroom. Extending the practical aspects of the learner-centered classroom to specific instructional approaches, I will also include examples from task-based language teaching, an approach to teaching focusing on authentic language and achieving communication through task completion.
