HUPE Rijeka Branch Meeting Report - June 11, 2025
The second HUPE Rijeka branch meeting took place on June 11, 2025 online via Zoom.
Agenda:
- Anita Jokić: Carpathia to the rescue
- Amela Ojdanić:Stories and Comics
- HUPE Rijeka president elections
- HUPE news
Anita Jokić from Prva riječka hrvatska gimnazija held a presentation of a project she did with her students on the topic of Titanic and Carpathia. The project consisted of several lessons during which the students learned more about ships and found out some interesting less known information about Titanic and the ship that came to the rescue, Carpathia. The project involved interactive activities during which the students had a chance to examine historical documents connected to Titanic and Carpathia, talk to the author of books Titanic and Carpathia, Slobodan Novković and learn about the connection of two ships with Croatia and Rijeka and the importance of Carpathia in the historical context of Titanic wreck.
Amela Ojdanić presented an example of storytelling in the form of a comic. The idea behind the workshop was that stories offer us so many opportunities to teach vocabulary and grammar or to cover different topics and cultural aspects. She shared with participants how any story can be used as a basis for writing a comic and it is up to the teacher to develop students' creativity, without forgetting linguistic accuracy. She demonstrated the use of a simple digital tool that enables students to either use and revise language structures or to express their own opinion on a topic.
Following the two workshops, HUPE Rijeka president election took place. As there was only one candidate, the current branch president, Doris Mesaroš from Gimnazija Eugena Kumičića Opatija, she was re-elected as the president of the HUPE Rijeka branch.
Finally, HUPE Rijeka branch president shared the latest HUPE news with the members, including information about the upcoming teacher training courses in New York and Bath, 33rd HUPE conference in Poreč on 24-26 October 2025, the information about the new board and changes in the membership fee and new edition of the newsletter HUPEzine.
