The day that changed everything

I was eight years old when we foun out mom was pregnant. Dad and I were overjoyed with thenews because I will become a big brother and I've always wanted to be an older brother. When the day came for mom to give birth, I was excited because dad and I didn't know what would mom callmy sister. Mom gave my sister the most beautiful name in the world. We celebrated getting a sister, it was a long night. After three days my sister and momleft the hospital and that's when I met her for the first time.I was overwelmed. When I saw my sister I started crying because i have never seen a cuter girl in my life. That was a cute little creature.

She had ligjt blue eyes, blonde hair, and was pale and thin. That was the best day of my life. Adn so the days passed and my sister grew bigger. Her birthday has arrived. Those were big preparations becouse we knew the whole family would come. We put up the balloons, cleaned up everything, went shopping, ordered food, decorated and set the tables. When we did all of that the guests slowly started arriving. My sister blew out the candle for the first time and everyone laughed. The birthday ended well. As time passed, wenoticed she wasn't hitting hermilestones, so we went to all sorts of doctors. All of them told us that everything was fine, but only one doctor said that something was wrong. She told us that she might have a genetic problem. We couldn't believe it becouse it is a very rare syndrome that she mentioned. She told us to go for genetic testingand after a while we did it. Three long months passed, we were in the store and I was pushing my sister in the stroller. We came to my mom and I saw my sister turning blue and rolling her eyes. I panickedbecouseI thought she has swallowed something. We went straight to the hospitaland found out that my sister had a seizur. One day after school I come tomy grandmother'shouse and my mom called me to say to get ready becouse we were going home. I found that strange becouse she was supposed to be at work, and it was only one in the afternoon. When she came to pick me up, she was all in tears, she found out the results-my sister had that syndrome. I started crying too. That was the saddest day of my life.

Everyone tried to tell us that all is going to be fine. The next day I came to school exhausted, useless and sad. When we talked to the teacher, she noticed that I was sad and quiet, so she askedme what was wrong, I started crying right away becouse I couldn't hold it back anymore. Italked the teacher in private and told her about my sisters rare syndrome. She tried to comfort me, and send me to the bathroom to dry my tears. When I returned to the class, the teacher left the classroom and everyone asked me what happened, I cried even more. I only told my best friends, and to tell everyone to leave me alone and not to ask me any questions. After a few days mom, dad and I took my sister to the doctor. He toldus that my sister would never walkand that she would be never able to talk, that broke our hearts. He even told us that physiotherapy is useless and that we can not do anything. From that daymom, dad and I started exercising more, redaing and giving my sister more attention. We have completed Amerivan training courses for working with children with developmental disabilities, and we apply what we have learned on a daily basis. Our entire day is filled with sensory therapies, physical therapy, feeding therapyand similar interventions. A few months ago, she said her first word, and for the past six months she has been walking with support. Her favourite colour is yellow and her favourite foods are smoked salamon and avocado. When she wakes up, she crawls toward my room and knocks on my door because she wants to play with me. She is a little miracle.

I realized that happiness is not beeing rich or winning the lottery, but that happiness is when we are healthy, when we are all together, and my mom and sister are not int he hospital for Christmas. Happiness is when my sister happily welcomes me home from school, when we sleep peacefully all night and when we are all smiling. Happiness is every bit of progress my sister makes. Nowmom, dad and I have the same wish, and with effort we think that one day it will come true. My sister is a blessing, a shinning star and my best friend. My favourite angel on Earth.
