Put a stop to bullying

I was never the type of girl who stood up for other people, but after this experience, everything changed.

Before I tell you exactly what happened, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Bianca. I'm thirteen years old and currently in the seventh grade. I was born and raised in a small town called Kindville, where I go to school. Now that you know a bit about me, I can finally tell you my story.

It all started back in the sixth grade, when a new student joined our class. Our teacher introduced him, gave him a seat in the back, and warned us to be nice to him. Little did she know that her well-intended words would later be completely useless, much like all her other repeated warnings. His name was Luca. He was shy and introverted, which sadly made him the perfect victim for the boys in my class. They quickly realized they could tease him because he wouldn't stand up for himself or say anything back. And, unfortunately, they were right, because he never did.

They started by calling him cruel names and whistling mockingly at him in the hallways. Then, day after day, the situation gradually got worse, slowly but surely. It was really sad to watch him being bullied, but I knew that if I confronted them, they wouldn't take me seriously. So I kept my fingers crossed, hoping it would get better or that they would at least stop there. Too bad my fingers didn't have magic powers.

I never believed in the old saying, "Everything happens for a reason," but after that day, it started to make sense to me. It was like any other ordinary school day at first. We had chemistry in the first period when the teacher announced that she would be changing the seating arrangement. I was sad because I was sitting next to my best friend at that time, and I didn't want that to change. The teacher moved me to the back of the classroom, in front of Luca and behind one of the bullies. His name was Jack. Jack was the loud and confident leader of his friend group, and he was the one who teased Luca the most. Although I was sad that I wasn't sitting with my best friend anymore, I saw this as the perfect opportunity to notice how badly Jack was bullying him.

The first few days weren't that bad. Jack would usually smirk at Luca's stutter or pretend to 'accidentally ' knock his book to the floor, though it was obvious he did it on purpose. But after a while, things started to get worse. He called Luca names, made him pick up the things he intentionally dropped, and stole his belongings. I decided I couldn't just stand by and watch Luca get bullied like that, so I told Jack I needed to talk to him after class. I expected him to laugh at me and to brush me off, but surprisingly, he agreed. After math class, we stayed in front of the classroom. It wasn't a long or serious conversation. It was more like a "hey, please stop doing that to Luca" kind of talk. He stayed quiet the entire time, and when it finally came down to agreeing or disagreeing, he just walked away without saying a word. For a moment, I thought he was too stunned to speak after realising what he was actually doing. It also crossed my mind that he might have gone to apologize to Luca or maybe even to tell his whole friend group to stop being mean to Luca. However, deep down, I knew that wasn't the case.

When I came to school the next day, I noticed something strange: both Luca and Jack were absent. A thousand scenarios ran through my head. The bell rang, and everyone settled into their seats. Well, except them. Our biology teacher started talking about the human body, but I couldn't concentrate. My thoughts kept drifting back to Luca and Jack. Ten long minutes later, Luca and Jack walked into the classroom together. Jack apologized for being late and explained that he and Luca had been working on a school project before classes, which was why they were late. We didn't have a school project. I immediately knew something was wrong. But before jumping to conclusions, I decided to try to figure out what had happened on my own.

After class, I pulled Luca aside to ask him why he was late, but he barely managed to get out the words, "s-school p-p-project". I knew he wasn't telling me the truth, so I tried asking Jack instead. When I asked Jack the same question, he called me stupid and said he had already explained that they were working on a school project. It was at that moment that I knew I had to find out what had happened and put a stop to it immediately. So the next day, I finally did something I had been putting off this whole time: I told the teacher.

That morning, I came to school earlier than usual and went straight up to our quiet, still-empty classroom. The teacher kindly let me in. As soon as she closed the door behind us, I started telling her about everything that had been happening over the last few weeks. I went on and on, speaking quickly and nervously, and I included every single detail. Our teacher was visibly stunned. She told me that I did the right thing by reporting this and that I should have handled it in this way much sooner. She would make sure that Luca got all the help and support he needed, and that Jack and his friends would receive the punishment they deserved. That day, I didn't go to class. Instead, I had to stay in the classroom and talk with a bunch of people whom I barely knew. Luca, Jack, and Jack's friends also came into the classroom one by one. After that, our teacher called our parents. This went on for a long time. We were there for nearly two hours before they finally let us go.

The next day, I found out what had actually happened the previous day. When Luca and Jack were late, Jack deliberately didn't let Luca come to class because Luca hadn't done Jack's homework for that day. As a result, Jack and his friends were expelled from school. Luca went to a professional therapist shortly afterward. He is doing a lot better now. He never thanked me for what I did, but I know he is truly grateful because he is always smiling at me whenever we meet. I choose to take those quiet, genuine smiles as his way of saying thank you.
