It was a beautiful, sunny morning, and Charlotte was getting out of bed when she saw a postman through the window. He was putting a letter into her mailbox. Charlotte got dressed quickly and rushed to see who the letter was from. She opened the envelope and started reading:
"Dear Charlotte,
I haven't heard from you since we were little. I really miss you. I hope we can see each other again!
Love, R."
Charlotte was confused by this mysterious note. She couldn't remember anybody whose name started with the initial R. She was thinking really hard, and was trying to remember all of her friends, even from elementary school. But many years had passed since she was a child and went to school. She really wanted to find out the identity of the person who wrote the letter, so she ran back into the house and looked for her school yearbook. She flipped through all the pages, but couldn't find any of her friends whose name started with R. She remembered that her aunt had been a teacher at her elementary school, so she called her and asked her if she remembered a pupil whose name started with that initial. Her aunt told her that she hadn't been teaching that final year because she was pregnant. Charlotte was devastated - and even more curious.
Her last hope was to go to the address the letter had come from. She looked at the stamp on the envelope. It was from California! But Charlotte lived in Pennsylvania. She tried to find the address on the envelope. At first, it looked like there was no address, until she noticed tiny writing:
"7429 Willow Crest Avenue, Apartment 3B."
She needed a plane ticket as soon as possible, but all the tickets were sold out because it was a holiday season and a lot of people were travelling.
Charlotte checked ticket availability every minute until a seat finally opened in business class. She immediately bought the ticket. She packed a few things in a small suitcase and went to the airport. She boarded the plane feeling a bit nervous. The weather had changed earlier that day and it got really bad by now, so the plane had to return to the airport. Now she had to wait for another flight after the storm cleared up. She had been waiting for two hours until the plane was ready to take off again. The flight was five hours long.
On the plane she still wondered about the mysterious sender. She tried to think of names, but she couldn't remember anyone whose name started with R - until something suddenly sparked in her mind. She broke down in tears when she realized it could be her special friend from primary school. Her name was Rachel.
Charlotte couldn't remember Rachel very well because Rachel had moved to another state when they were young. Her father had gotten a better-paid job, as their family had been struggling financially. Rachel had been sad to leave her school and friends behind. That day had changed everything for her. In her new school, she never found a true friend like Charlotte.
While Charlotte was thinking about her friend, she fell asleep on the plane. When she woke up, she was already in California. It was dark outside.
Charlotte walked through the streets until she reached a sketchy alleyway where the apartment was located. She asked the building owner if a person named Rachel lived there. He answered that no Rachel lived there.
Charlotte began to wonder whether the letter even was from Rachel - or if Rachel was just a memory. Time had changed everything. She also started questioning whether R even stood for the sender's first name.
"Maybe it's their surname", she thought; "or maybe they changed it when they got married." It was still a mystery, but she was determined to find the truth. The next day, in the same alleyway, she met a woman named Rebecca. Charlotte asked her if she knew a person named Rachel. Rebecca said that a girl named Rachel had lived there before but had moved out a long time ago. Charlotte started to think about the owner's words. She felt that one of them must be lying.
She knocked on the apartment door again. When the owner opened it, Charlotte noticed a photo behind him that looked familiar. It was Rachel! She wondered if the man might be her father.
She asked him again, "Do you know Rachel?"
He replied that he had a daughter named Rachel.
At first, Charlotte was confused. She had asked him the day before if a person named Rachel lived there, and he simply said no. Then she realized she had asked a different question. Rachel didn't live there anymore - he was simply the apartment owner, and also her father. Charlotte asked him for Rachel's phone number. He said he hadn't seen her for years because she had moved out. He also explained that Rachel had struggled mentally after moving, because she had difficulty making friends at her new school.
Charlotte thanked him and left. She was very confused by the whole situation - how could she have gotten a letter from that address if Rachel no longer lived there ? She took the envelope out of her pocket and looked at it closely. And then she realized - the letter was written many years ago, but it was probably misplaced so it arrived late.
As she was walking down the street slowly, she suddenly blinked and saw younger silhouettes of Rachel and herself. A memory returned - the day Rachel had told her she was moving away. They had been sitting on the school stairs. It was a windy day, and Rachel was holding back her tears. They had promised to write to each other - a promise that slowly faded as time passed.
That was the day that changed everything, even though Charlotte hadn't realized it at the time. She understood that while she missed Rachel, Rachel had actually needed her. The realization broke her, but it also gave her a strange sense of peace.
Some people are meant to stay in our lives. Others are meant to stay in our memories. Both can change us. And for the first time, Charlotte accepted that the day Rachel left was not the end of something - it was the beginning of who she became, a truth she would carry quietly with her for the rest of her life.
