A smile that made a difference

In the busy city of New York, Mr. Bob was a man who lived by the clock. He wore expensive suits, carried shiny briefcases and always looked at his phone. To Mr. Bob, life was like a giant math problem. He didn't have time for games, pets, or even a simple "Hello" to strangers. He thought being serious was the only way to be successful. Then came a very bad Tuesday. At his big office building everything went wrong. Computers crashed, people were shouting and Mr. Bob lost a lot of money for his company. His head hurt and his heart felt like it was being squeezed by a heavy rubber band. He needed to get away from the noise. So, he walked out of the building and into a small park nearby.

Mr. Bob sat on a wooden bench, huffing and puffing with stress. On the other end of the bench sat an old man in a fuzzy brown jacket. The man was feeding tiny pieces of bread to the birds. When Mr. Bob looked over, the old man didn't look away. Instead, he gave Mr. Bob a warm smile.

It wasn't just a quick "hi" smile. It was a smile that made the man's eyes crinkle up like old paper. It was the kind of smile that felt like a warm blanket on a cold day. It seemed to say, "I know you are having a tough time, but the world is still a beautiful place". Suddenly, Mr. Bob felt the heavy rubber band around his heart snap. He took a deep breath of fresh air.

For the first time in years, Mr. Bob noticed the bright green leaves on the trees and the sound of water splashing in the fountain. The scary math problems in his head finally found a solution.

"Rough day?", the old man asked.

"The worst.", Mr. Bob whispered.

"Well...", the man said tossing a crumb to a pigeon. "Don't let the world make you forget to be a human being. You are more important than all the computers and screens."

They sat together for a while. Mr. Bob didn't look at his phone once.

When he finally stood up, he felt lighter; like he was walking on clouds instead of the city's heavy concrete.

When Mr. Bob got back in his office, he didn't yell at anyone. He saw his assistant Sarah looking worried. He remembered it was her birthday.

"Happy birthday, Sarah!", he said with a smile. "Go home early today and spend time with your family!". Sarah's eyes went wide. She smiled back

It was like a spark of light from one person to another.

Over the next few months, everything changed for Mr. Bob. He started being kind to his co-workers. He started helping at school, teaching kids to save their allowances.

Mr. Bob even got a golden retriever named Barnaby.

Because he was kinder, his team worked better together, and the company became more successful than ever.

A year later, Mr. Bob went to the park to find the old man. He wanted to say "Thank you", but the bench was empty.

Mr. Bob asked a lady who worked at the park, if she knew the man in the brown jacket.

"Oh, that was Arthur", she said. "He was a teacher for many years. He passed away a few months ago. He always told me his favorite thing to do was to make people happy, when they looked like they were carrying the weight of the world."

Mr Bob sat on the bench. He realized Arthur's smile had been a special gift.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out some bird seeds and waited.

Soon, a young woman in a very fancy suit came rushing by. She looked angry and very stressed out.

As she passed, Mr. Bob looked up and gave her the biggest, the warmest smile he could.

The woman stopped. She looked confused at first but then her shoulders relaxed. She gave a little nod and walked a bit slower, looking up at the trees for the first time in a while.

Mr. Bob watched her go, knowing that one little smile can truly make all the difference in the world.
