The day that changed everything

One rainy, foggy and cold afternoon, I was coming home after a road trip with my family. My sister and I were sleeping in the car while my dad was driving and my mom was talking with him. Bright flashes of lightning lit up the dark, rainy sky. In front of us, as my mom told me, was a old man in a yellow, small truck, and behind us was a taxi driver that was really stressed and he was in a hurry. The old man turned the signal to turn left, so we slowed down. But the taxi driver didn't see that and he wanted to pass us and the old man at the same time while the old man was turning left. And suddenly, there was a loud crash. The taxi driver suddenly crashed into the old man, and the car was lifted and turned onto its side, sliding across the wet road. The old man and the taxi driver slid into the trees. We were not involved in the crash ourselves, yet we saw it all and experienced every second of it, the cars sliding, the loud crashes, and the chaos around us. I was sleeping and I didn't hear or see anything but my mom told me what happend. We pulled over to help them, while the taxi driver was panicking and the passengers were shocked and angry. My mom tried to call the police or the firefighters or the ambulance, but there was no signal because of the rain. My dad and my mom ran out the car to help the old man, but my sister and I were still sleeping. My mom and dad were soaking wet but they were still trying to help the old man. After I woke up, I just saw that our car was at the side of the road and that my parents weren't in the car. I looked around and saw a car flipped on its side and my parents and the taxi driver trying to pull someone from the car. I was waiting in our car and all of a sudden my dad came rushing in the car. I asked him what happen, but he didn't say anything and just told me to try call the police or the firefighters or the ambulance. I couldn't reach them, and neither could he. He ran out of the car, and I bursted into tears. I was scared and confused and I didn't stop trying to get the police or other emergency services, but I couldn't get them. I was panicking and at the same time watching them trying to pull the old man out of the truck. Luckily, my town that I live in was hosting a firefighting competitions at that time so firefighters from Supetar were passing by. They stopped and immediately started helping. One firefighter was trying to get the old man out of the car, one firefighter was navigating the traffic, and one was interrogating the witnesses. After a long, wet and exhausting time, they finally got the man out of the car. The taxi driver was very upset about the situation and he was very sorry. The old man forgave him and the told the taxi driver to not be angry at hime self because that can happend to anyone. The taxi driver and the old man had to go to the police station so we went home. My mom came to the car soaking wet. My parents started talking among themselves. I was still crying, but they started talking to me. They explained everything to me. I was still crying but in silence because I was afraid that they would get angry with me. My dad started driving and my mom was trying to dry herself. My sister was still sleeping at that time. When we came home, it was already dark. My grandparents asked my mom why was she so wet, so she explained the hole situation to them. They were shocked and grateful taht we were not a part of the car crash. Few days later we were hosting a big family and friends dinner. My mom was really stressed about that dinner because there was a lot of people coming. Our hometown friends, our friends from a different town, our friends and family members from different countries... My mon and my dade made a big dinner with almost five courses. The dinner started at six in the afternoon and it finished at almost two in the morning. At one point, after the seconde course, my parents were talking with our friends and family and one friend from our hometown mentioned how he heard about a car crash at the top of our island were we live. Our other friends started to talk about that same car crash without knowing that we were almost involved in that car crash. My mom and dad found it fascinating to listen to the way they talked about it, casually discussing the situation, completely unaware that we had almost been involved in it ourselves. There was something surreal about hearing the conversation unfold from a distance, knowing how close it had actually come to us, while they spoke as if it were just another story, detached from our reality. At one pount they decided to tell them. They were shocked to find out that we were almost a part of that car crash. They told us about how lucky we were that we weren't a part of that car crash and they started joking about our luck so they came up with a new nickname for us. They still joke with us about that nickname althought that car crash happend almost a year ago. Althought they laughed about that car crash, it was very painful and hard to watch and to hear the fully story for me. It has left a deep scar on me and even today I get scared when we are driving in foggy, heavy rain. I wouldn’t wish this experience on anyone. But if it happens, I hope all remain safe, and that time is kinder to them than it has been to me.
