The day that changed everything

It was a sunny day, and I had no clue about the surprise waiting for me...

"We're going to the animal shelter" said mum, "Get ready, and don't let breakfast get cold!"

I was simply baffled, "Shelter" I repeated to myself, the word foreign on my tongue, "Why are we going to the shelter?", and it hit me. For months I had been practically begging my parents for a dog, "Please mum, I'll take him on walks, feed him, bathe him, anything!" but it seemed they wouldn't budge in the slightest. Until that morning, as I woke up to get ready for the same boring Saturday of "sitting in front of the TV until I gouged my eyes out from boredom watching Looney Tunes reruns from 1950", and as usual I started this routine by going to the kitchen and grabbing cereal while being 100% sure there wasn't even milk in the fridge, and here we get to the dialogue from the first few sentences you've read at the beginning, and I'm sure that you already understand that I was more thrilled than a squirrel finding a big nut in the forest.

We went to our car, at the time we were using my grandpa's car because my father said it was "still usable" (I swear the inside smelled like a moldy rotisserie chicken topped with sweet and sour sauce from a Chinese restaurant that you went to once and forgot all about it the next day, also the horrible gut-wrenching sound that car made, gave me nightmares for the rest of my days).

As we arrived at the shelter, I was already mentally preparing to jump out of the car and vault over the fence to get inside, but I didn't go through with the plan because I would probably get stuck on the fence and rip my pants open. We entered the shelter and were immediately greeted by a kind lady who showed us around, and my eyes landed on an adorable, short haired, majestic black dog, and I immediately wanted that one, so imagine my sorrow when we found out she was an outdoor dog, and since we lived in an apartment, it was no good... So, we went on to find a new, and lo and behold, there he was, Rico, they called him, toast coloured fur, all the hair you could want on his belly, and his eyes... Oh, his big, beady eyes! How beautiful they shined in the light, and the test walk! He followed me as if he had known me since birth, and so we adopted him.

As we went back home, we realised in dawning horror that we didn't pick a name! Heavens alive, how could we do something like that? So, we picked a few, Bonbon? Too sweet. Panda? He looks like toast, what are we thinking? And finally, we landed on "Borko", which if you put in a name meaning website, would give you the words battle and war, so yes, we gave our dog a name which normally signifies battle, but in this case, it's just a sentient fluffy marshmallow.
