The day that changed everything

The day that changed everything

Everything was normal. Growing up in a peaceful neighborhood with a fluffy orange dog waking me up every morning when he wanted breakfast, my parents who packed my lunch for kindergarten every morning and didn't forget my bunny plushie who I was attached to. My dad warmed up the car before he took me to kindergarten so I wouldn't be cold. Everything was perfectly fine and normal until the day the day that changed everything. Me and my friends were playing with letter blocks while watching Sponge Bob, and our nannies' preparing snacks for us, when the TV lit up with a flashing red sign. Big flashing words appeared on the screen and a robotlike voice warning us about something. Of course, my five-year-old mind didn't understand what it was or what it said on the screen, but by the faces of my nannies I knew something was wrong. I clutched my bunny under my arm as the nannies told us not to be scared and not yell. They led us to their lounge area and told us to be quiet. All of us got squished under the table while gently being shushed and told that everything was okay. Still, we didn't know what was happening, but the deathly silence quickly got disturbed by a loud, terrifying bang above us. All the kids began crying and ome of the girls screamed with fear. Our nanny quickly tried to quiet her, but it was a scream too late. It got quiet again before the same loud bangs began coming closer to us. I started crying but stayed silent because I was too afraid of what was outside, or who was outside that door. Soon enough, the door creaked open and a big cloud of steam poured onto the floor, then, a clicking noise came. Thank God that the TV was turned on from before and it distracted the "thing". It went away and that was our chance to escape whatever that was. The nannies quickly gathered us up and we rushed outside where some of the parents were hiding behind their cars waiting for their kids. I saw my parents and ran to them as fast as I could. My dad hugged me and we got into the car. There was my suitcase, my mom's and dad's ones. My dog Albert was sitting in the middle and was shaking because he even knew something was up. My dad started driving and I tried asking my parents what's wrong, and what was happening, but they wouldn't awnser me. However, soon enough I saw what was wrong. Helicopters flying over our city and people running on the roads trying to get away from whatever was chasing them. I looked behind through the window and I saw it. It was a huge creature, with four spiky long legs. A deformed head but not like ours. It wasn't human. It was from another planet, another dimension. It was very fast, but so silent, not even the floor was shaking. And I was confused, because when I was hiding in the kindergarten its sounds were very loud, and I could hear its every step, but now as it was running after us and some other people it was silent, so silent you would get tricked into thinking that it wasn't even behind us anymore. I cried and gripped my bunny tighter while my dad was now speeding over 120 miles per hour because the creature was getting too close, and my mom tried to calm me down even though she was in tears herself. Now that I told you the beginning of the end, I must go supply hunting. It's been ten years since the "creatures" took over the Earth, and now, in two months, I'll turn 16. Me and my parents got separated at the border of the country because of the amount of people trying to leave the country, and I ended up with a group of nice people who found me by the side of the road hours after the separation with my parents. They had a camp near the abandoned hiker camp, and they took care of me until I was 13, when I left them. I left because they started acting like I was a burden, and the food supplies became short for all of us to share. They thought me how to make myself weapons and how to protect myself from the "Endbringers" as we call them. All the government laboratories shut down after their attack, and till today we have no idea what the creatures are, or how did they end up on Earth. The place I ended up in is a now abandoned town in South America, on the border of Paraguay, Ponta Pora. I came here with another survivor who was willing to drive me far away from Panama. And how did I get to Panama? Well, I snuck onto the ship that was carrying metal walls and weapons for the military who were protecting a bunker in North America but got the supplies from Panama. It was a long trip, but at least the man who drove me here shared his food with me and gave me advice on how to protect myself from the Endbringers. Now it was time to get those supplies from the abandoned store. I sneaked out of my secret enclosure that I had made in an old farmhouse. I got a pocketknife and a machete I found in the woods while looking for a place to settle down. I had to be quiet because the creatures would sneak up on me if I made a sound, and I really didn't want that to happen. I made my way into the town that was covered in dust and full of crashed cars. The silence was so loud, it was defeating. No civilization, no animals, not a sound. Only the soft breeze of the warm wind, and the trash flying around on the road. I had to be quick, because the Endbringers come out at night when the Sun doesn't burn their thin skin. They are like vampires, but don't just suck the blood out of you, they will hunt you down until you're dinner on their plate. I entered the store and looked for some canned food, water bottles, if they had any left on the shelves, because people took most stuff before leaving this place. I grabbed all the canned beans I found, four water bottles, some bandages and alcohol for sterilization if I get any wounds. I found some candy, but I was so worried about what would happen that I didn't even want a sweet treat at this point. I was ready to leave the store when i heard it. The mimicking sound of the creatures that they made when trying to trick people into thinking that someone was calling for help. It was like a subtle yell from the distance, sounding like someone was yelling "help". I heard that many times before, and I wasn't falling for it again. It was near, and it knew that I was here, it was just trying to trick my mind. I grabbed my machete and left through the back door of the store quietly. I knew whatever I did that I couldn't escape it without hurting it first. So, I was ready. Ready for the attack. I climbed onto the building next to the store and made a loud screaming noise. The creature was hiding in the woods because the Sun was burning its skin still, but it desperately wanted to come out and eat me alive. I threw a rock at the spot where it was hiding to irritate it even more, I wanted it to attack me. Or at least try to do so. The Sun started to set right at time, and now the Endbringer would come out. Finally, I saw the trees and the building shaking, it started to climb up here. I gripped my machete tightly in my hand and stood straight in front of that disgusting, slimy, spiky monster that was staring into my soul. It started running towards me and it was ready to tear me apart, and just when it came close enough, I slipped a metal sheet under its claw and it slipped over the edge of the building, falling onto the broken car, and tore itself apart. I looked down at it for a few moments before grabbing my backpack and walking back to my hideout. Weeks pass by fast when you are worried. I still think about my parents and where they are now. My dog Albert, and the rest of my family that I did not get to say goodbye to before we left home 10 years ago. The only thing I got that reminds me of my parents is my plushie bunny I got when I was born. I carried it all the way from home, to Panama, across Venezuela and Brazil. I got into some extremely dangerous situations where the Endbringers almost got me, through heavy storms, and sizzling summer days. Through weeks with no food and weeks where I was lucky and had great supply hunts. From the beginning of this whole mess when I was five, 15 years flew by. I'm turning 20 in two months now, and the Endbringers started to die out. Their population couldn't keep growing because of the extreme climate change, and the growth of temperature that they couldn't handle. The temperature burnt them alive, one by one, until they weren't a threat anymore. It was rare to see one, but even if I did they wouldn't attack because they were too weak now. The rest of the survivors that lived around the area found me and I joined them in finding the others. Our group grew as we found more and more people. Another man who owned a ship and sailed survivors over the sea sailed us back to North America. I returned back to my hometown in hope that my parents would be there waiting for me, and to my luck, two differently looking people, but the same by heart, were in our old house with my old dog Albert waiting for my return. Life was finally normal again. It felt even better than it did 15 years ago. It was like a new start for the Earth, for us as people. We were given a new chance. A new chance at life.
